Extended monitoring of PFAS in fire-fighting foams: new compounds and European recommendations

Research into PFAS at sites exposed to Aqueous Film-Forming Foams (AFFF) has led to increased analysis of new analytes, in particular zwitterionic and cationic compounds. In 2022, the European Commission has recommended monitoring the compounds Capstone A and Capstone B (known as 6:2 FTNO and 6:2 FTAB). In response to these recommendations, Wellington Laboratories has extended its range of PFAS standards for AFFF to include N-OxAmP-6:2FOSA and N-AP-6:2FOSA, the latter being an important biotransformation intermediate for Capstone A and B.

The importance of certified reference standards for new PFAS analyses

The introduction of these standards for emerging PFAS aims to improve the analytical methods used to detect these compounds in environmental samples. Zwitterionic PFASs such as M3N-CMAmP-6:2FOSA require specific transitions for quantification by mass spectrometry (positive ESI). These standards enable more accurate quantification and contribute to understanding the environmental transformation mechanisms of these compounds.

Towards better monitoring of PFAS in the environment

By extending its range of standards, Wellington Laboratories is making a valuable contribution to meeting the new challenges posed by emerging PFAS in AFFF. By incorporating certified reference standards and advanced detection methods, researchers and regulators are better equipped to monitor these persistent contaminants and protect ecosystems and human health.
