Find out more about dioxins
Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) are chlorinated tricyclic aromatic compounds. Of the 75 congeners identified, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is the best known and the most toxic. TCDD is a persistent organic pollutant (POP) and is classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
In addition, PCDDs are mainly formed during incomplete combustion processes. Because of their resistance to biodegradation, they are of particular concern for the environment.
