Analyse hexafluoropropylene oxide oligomeric acids (HFPO-DA) with our analytical standards
HFPO-DA, or 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoro-2-(1,1,2,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropoxy)propanoic acid, is a per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) compound. Its presence in the environment can result from direct discharges during manufacturing processes or from the leaching of commercial products.
Anticipating concerns about this contamination, in 2013 Wellington Laboratories synthesised native and 13C3-labelled reference standards for HFPO-DA. These standards are essential for researchers carrying out quantitative analyses of this potential contaminant. They are compatible with analytical methods such as liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS), in particular EPA methods 537.1 and 533, which include HFPO-DA among the target analytes.

GenX, HFPO-DA (hexafluoropropylene oxide-dimer acid), is a by-product of the manufacture of fluoropolymers, used as a substitute for perfluorooctanoic acids (PFOA) in the manufacture of fluoropolymers, such as Teflon. It is often used in industrial applications for its non-stick and heat-resistant properties.
It can be detected in environmental samples as a result of residual leaks from commercial products or direct releases during manufacturing processes. from commercial products or direct discharges during manufacturing processes.
The benefits of analytical standards
Wellington standards for HFPO oligomers allow:
- Specific detection by LC-MS/MS, despite the absence of universal standards for all oligomers.
- Reliable quantification using isotopically labelled versions (¹³C) – essential in complex matrices.
