Find out more about polybrominated diphenyl ethers

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs, are a class of organobromine compounds used as flame retardants. They are present in a wide range of everyday consumer products, such as building materials, electronic appliances, furniture, vehicles, etc.

PBDEs are made up of two halogenated aromatic rings and are classified according to the average number of bromine atoms in the molecule. They are known for their toxicity and persistence in the environment, which has led to their gradual elimination under the Stockholm Convention.
