Perfluoroalkane sulfonamido ethanols are a sub-category of per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS). These compounds are characterised by a carbon chain in which the hydrogen atoms are replaced by fluorine atoms, giving them great chemical stability and resistance to degradation.

In the environment, these compounds can degrade into perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluoroalkanesulphonic acids (PFSAs), which are more persistent degradation products. Examples of these ethanols are N-MeFASE (N-methyl perfluoroalkane sulfonamidoethanol) and N-EtFASE (N-ethyl perfluoroalkane sulfonamidoethanol).
