Our standards for QUATS detection
Quaternary ammoniums, better known as QUATs, are chemical compounds widely used in disinfectants, hygiene products and certain industrial formulations. Their presence in the environment and consumer products requires rigorous analytical methods to ensure their identification and quantification.
At BCP Instruments, we offer analytical laboratories a complete range of reference materials for QUATs, developed by Chiron AS, a world-renowned designer of high-quality analytical standards.
Reference material categories for QUATs
Chiron AS offers a wide range of analytical standards for laboratories, covering several classes of QUATs essential for environmental and industrial analyses.
1. Standards de QUATs purs
These high-purity standards enable laboratories to develop and validate robust analytical methods. They are essential for instrument calibration and the accurate quantification of QUATs in various matrices.
2. Pre-qualified QUAT mixtures
These mixtures are designed to facilitate multi-component analysis in a single run. They avoid tedious preparation steps and optimise analytical performance.
3. Isotopically labelled standards
Isotopically labelled QUATs are essential tools for quantification by mass spectrometry. They enable matrix effects to be corrected and improve the reliability of analytical results.
4. Environmental matrix mixtures
These standards are prepared in matrices simulating real samples (water, soil, food). They are used to test and validate analytical procedures under real conditions.

Find out more about quaternary ammoniums
QUATs, also known as QACs, are salts of quaternary ammonium cations , with one of a number of long-chain hydrocarbons and short-chain substitutions such as methyl, ether and benzyl.
Classification by the US Environmental Protection Agency
The EPA (the US Environmental Protection Agency) has combined quats into four groups for testing and registration purposes. Assigning them in this way facilitates efforts to build a database that will support the registration of the whole family of quats.
- 1 : QUATs substituted by alkyl or hydroxyalkyl (straight chain)
- 2: Non-halogenated benzyl-substituted QUATs
- 3: Substituted di- and tri-chlorobenzyl
- 4: QUATs with unusual substituents (charged heterocyclic ammonium compounds)
Why analyse QUATs?
QUATs are commonly used antimicrobial agents, but their presence in water, food and surfaces can pose health and environmental safety problems. Analysis of these compounds is essential for :
- Product quality control: ensuring the conformity of disinfectants and detergents.
- Monitoring the environment: detection of QUAT residues in drinking water and wastewater.
- Extending food safety: controlling accidental contamination in food production.
