Learn more about chlorinated biphenylols
Chlorinated biphenylols (HO-PCBs, for hydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyls) are organic compounds derived from biphenyl, comprising 2 benzene rings linked together, substituted with both hydroxyl groups (-OH) and chlorine atoms (Cl).
They belong to the family of halogenated aromatic compounds and, more specifically, to the hydroxylated derivatives of chlorinated biphenyls.
Example:
- 4′-hydroxy-3,3′,4,5-tetrachlorobiphenyl: an example of chlorinated biphenyl.
- These compounds may be hydroxylated metabolites of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), formed in particular in living organisms.
Properties and challenges:
- Persistent: They are relatively stable and degrade slowly in the environment.
- Lipophilic: They tend to accumulate in the fatty tissues of living beings.
- Toxicity: Some have endocrine activity or toxicity similar to dioxins.
