They have been widely used in insulating oils, plasticisers and paints, but are now banned in many countries, particularly in Europe, because of their: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High toxicity (some are carcinogenic, neurotoxic, endocrine disruptors ).<\/li>\n<li>Bioaccumulation in the fatty tissues of living organisms.<\/li>\n<li>Persistence in the environment (soil, sediment, biota) over several decades.<\/li>\n<li>Long-distance transport (they can even be found in the Arctic).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Monitoring<\/h3>\n<p>This is why PCBs are monitored in many contexts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Water, soil and sediment,<\/li>\n<li>Food products (fish, milk, meat),<\/li>\n<li>Human biological samples (blood, breast milk),<\/li>\n<li>Contaminated waste (transformers, used oils).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, PCBs exist in 209 different forms (congeners), depending on the number and position of the chlorine atoms. This makes their analysis extremely complex. Hence the importance of reliable standards.
