PFASs (per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances) with unique physico-chemical properties, mainly used in advanced industrial applications.<\/p>\n<h3>Composition and physico-chemical properties<\/h3>\n<p>HFPO oligomers are derived from hexafluoropropylene oxide, a fluorinated monomer used in the manufacture of polymers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High water solubility: unlike other long-chain PFASs, they migrate easily into groundwater.<\/li>\n<li>Resistance to degradation: they are very stable chemically and thermally.<\/li>\n<li>Low adsorption to soils, making them highly mobile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Industrial uses<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>HFPO-DA (GenX) has been introduced as a substitute for PFOA in the manufacture of fluoropolymers (e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene &#8211; PTFE).<\/li>\n<li>Used in the production of chemical-resistant coatings, industrial surfactants, membranes, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Role as environmental contaminants<\/h3>\n<p>They are now monitored as emerging pollutants, in particular because of their presence in industrial waste and their mobility in aquatic environments.<\/p>\n<p>HFPO-DA (GenX) is classified by the US EPA as a potentially toxic substance, with documented effects on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>liver,<\/li>\n<li>kidneys,<\/li>\n<li>and embryonic development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Their detection is targeted by methods such as <a
