Find out more about EPA-533 Method
EPA method 533 is a standardised analytical procedure for detecting and quantifying PFAS in drinking water matrices. Developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the method is based on liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). EPA method 533 measures 25 precise PFAS (none with more than 12 carbon atoms), including perfluorinated acids, sulphonates, fluorotelomer sulphonates and poly- and perfluorinated ether carboxylic acids. It is used in particular by environmental laboratories to monitor water quality and ensure compliance with safety standards.
In addition, this method complements method 537.1, since it incorporates 14 of the 18 PFAS covered by method 537.1. Method 533 measures 11 more PFAS than method 537.1. This includes more hydrophilic chemicals such as PFBA. By combining the two methods, 29 different PFAS can be measured in drinking water.
